This 1968 release is a compendium of the changes in Australian surfing over the proceding decade. It covers the arrival of the Malibu board and charts the rise of Midget Farelly and Nat Young to international prominence. With footage from most of Evan's previous films, it shows Midget surfing as a 13 year old, as well as in the Manly World Titles six years later, along with Nat's performances in the Peru and San Diego World Champs.

By the early 1970's the North Shore of Oahu, Hawaii was already established as the world's ultimate surfing Mecca. It was a true proving ground for any surfer who wanted to play on the main stage. Every winter, the best surfers in the world converged on the North Shore to test their skills in the most radical waves known to man, but it was also a cultural crossroads, a melting pot of surfers and stoners where weirdness was the norm.

The lawless atmosphere, consisting of gangs and drugs and hippies and surfboards, was often described as 'the wild west'.

This is where humble beginnings of a professional sport were born

Filmed in 16mm, circa 1965-67, around the virgin coastline of New Zealand and the classic points of Northern Queensland, Australia. Features six-time NZ champion Wayne Parks. Wayne`s artistic flowing style of surfing is influenced by Australian legends Russell Hughes, Bob McTavish and the incomparable Californian surfer George Greenough. This earned Doc the status of being the first surf photographer. He shot over 900 pictures in and out of the water in the 1930’s and early 1940’s. He was close friends with Tom Blake who originally inspired Doc to swim in the surf with a camera. Doc shot stills of such a high quality that future photographers including Don James and Leroy Grannis tried to emulate him. Doc’s photography was published worldwide in The Encyclopedia Britanica, National Geographic Magazine, Life Magazine and the London Daily Mirror to name a few. This helped to spread the sport of surfing worldwide.
Doc also documented this era by shooting 16mm movie film which was mostly shot from the water. His films include shots of the top surfers of that period such as Hoppy Swartz, Jim Bailey and Tule Clark.
“Doc Ball ~ Surfing’s Legendary Lensman” is a 43 minute documentary which features Doc’s best movie clips and also his world famous book, California Surfriders. Doc explains what it was like to be one of the first surfers on the mainland. Get an inside look at the Original Palos Verdes Surfing Club and see the female members surf including Mary Ann Hawkins and movie actress Martha Chapin. “Doc Ball ~ Surfing’s Legendary Lensman” covers Doc’s relationship with the Father of Surfing, Duke Kahanamoku. See never before shown clips of Duke clowning around. Doc details the evolution of surfboard design which includes Tom Blakes contributions to surfing like the skeg and Hawaiian Hollow Board.
Producer/ Director Carl Ackerman worked closely with Doc for seven years on this project. This film includes a breathtaking sequence of 92 year old Ball bombing a hill on his skateboard. This movie came about when Jack Johnson, surfer and musician, got ahold of some 16mm film, and decided to follow Kelly Slater and some others as they surfed and explored the island of Sumatra. Produced by Slater, this surfing movie is an awesome insight into the waves surrounding that area, and shines a light on a couple professional surfers and how they're able to finally get away from constant crowds and unlock their free surfing capabilites.
